After his wife Louisa died Eddy was cared for probably at Launde Abbey by others in the family and a governess. Alfred kept in touch while away at sea writing delightful letters beautiful illustrated with drawings and watercolours. He wrote these to Eddy between the ages of nearly 3 and 15.
